MADISON, Wis. (AP) — Supporters of former President Donald Trump are launching a second recall attempt Wisconsin Republican Assembly Speaker Robin Vos from the post after the first attempt appears to have failed.

The recall organizers filed papers to launch a second recall effort on Wednesday, just a day after asking a court to give them more time to recover the signatures Vos challenged in the first recall petition. Organizers on Thursday said they were not giving up hope for the first attempt, calling the new “simultaneous” attempt.

Voss was initially marked for recall because he refused impeachment of a top state election official or continue trying to decertify President Joe Biden’s 2020 Wisconsin victory. His actions angered Trump, who accused Vos of covering up election corruption, while Trump supporters mounted an unsuccessful primary challenge in 2022 and are now trying to force a nullification election.

The second impeachment effort says he should be impeached because of his “tacit support for the Chinese Communist Party,” lack of commitment to election integrity, obstruction of lower prescription drug costs, and “flagrant disregard for his own his constituents, calling them ‘disgusting works’, morons and idiots.’

Voss make this comment last week as they ridiculed the recall effort, including mocking their claims that he was secretly working for the Chinese government.

“The wrongdoers running the recall against me said I was an agent of the Chinese Communist Party,” he told WisPolitics.com at lunch. “It was the last text they sent out in desperation to somehow show people that I’m not a conservative Republican.”

Voss, the longest-serving Assembly speaker in Wisconsin history, declined Thursday to comment on the latest recall effort.

The organizer of the recall, Matthew Snorek, did not return an email seeking comment. Organizers of the recall said in a statement Thursday that their goal was to “strengthen the integrity of the recall process by ensuring that every step we take is marked by precision, transparency and trust.”

Ultimately, it’s up to the bipartisan Wisconsin Board of Elections to determine whether enough valid signatures have been collected to require a void election. The commission did not vote on the first submission, but an initial review found that not enough valid signatures collected by the inhabitants of the district Voss was elected to represent.

But since Voss now lives in a different area under new maps The Legislature passed, the election commission asked the Wisconsin Supreme Court to clarify where the recall would take place. Determining this would also dictate where petition signatures should come from and how many should be collected.

The Supreme Court has not yet said whether or when it will rule on the matter.

The organizers of the recall faced a deadline on Tuesday to refute Vos’ challenges to their signatures. Instead, they asked the Dane County Circuit Court to give it more time to review the challenges. In a court filing, organizers asked to have up to five days after the Supreme Court ruled on which district boundary was in effect.

The district court scheduled a hearing for Friday in that case.

Voss said the first recall petition was “woefully short” of the required signatures, regardless of which legislative district was used, and was riddled with fraud and criminal activity. The Racine County District Attorney is also investigating allegations that the petitions included names of people who did not sign them.

The Election Commission has a deadline of April 11 to decide whether there are enough valid signatures on the original petition to order a void election. His decision can be appealed in court. If successful, the recall will likely be scheduled for June.

The new recall petition is due May 28, meaning the recall election likely won’t be until September. That would be after the Aug. 13 primary, where Voss could face a challenge before the November general election.
