MSO’s new music director Laura Jackson is ready to ‘shake things up’
Jackson will lead pianist Joyce Yang with the Madison Symphony Orchestra in her first concert as music director designate on Nov. 6-8 in Overture Hall. Laura Jackson has been named as the new music director designate for the Madison Symphony Orchestra (MSO), aiming to "shake things up a bit" in Madison. Jackson will officially make her official debut with the MSO in November, with the concerts Nov. 6-8 expected to "begin a partnership" with the ensemble. She pushed for Carlos Simon’s “Amen!” to open the program, a move that she believes is a refreshing reworking of what an orchestra can do. Music director emeritus John DeMain is set to continue leading the current season and Jackson will assume her role full time in the 2027-28 season.
