Help Wisconsin bats during international bat week
MADISON, Wis. — The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources encourages Wisconsinites to take action to help bats during International Bat Week, Oct. 24-31, and throughout the year. The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is encouraging Wisconsinites to take action against bats during International Bat Week, Oct. 24-31. The bat population is declining due to white-nose syndrome, a disease that attacks bats during hibernation and leaves them vulnerable to starvation. Four of the eight bats found in Wisconsin are state-threatened species, including big brown bat, little brown bat (also federally endangered), and tricolored bat. The silver-haired bat is of special concern and is in need of conservation action. DNR conservation biologist and bat program hibernacula specialist, Jennifer Redell, suggests that keeping hibernating bats safe in winter should be a priority for those seeking fewer mosquitoes. The agency also encourages volunteers to plant native plants and control burdock on property to entangle bats and small songbirds.
