In the 608: Clean Lakes Alliance urges residents to keep fall leaves out of streets, storm drains
As leaves begin to fall across the Madison area, Clean Lakes Alliance is encouraging residents to keep them out of streets and storm drains to help protect local waterways. Clean Lakes Alliance, a Madison-based nonprofit, has urged residents to keep leaves out of streets and storm drains to protect local waterways. The organization's watershed programs associate director, Caitlin McAleavey, stated that leaves left in the street can release phosphorus and other nutrients that eventually make their way into local lakes. The group recommends several lake-friendly ways to manage fallen leaves, including mulching them, composting them or using them in garden beds. Residents can also use municipal leaf collection programs to keep them out of street and storm drains. Information about these methods is available here.
