UW-Madison faculty leaders discuss graduate enrollment, AI initiatives, financial aid changes
University Committee members examined the effects of federal funding uncertainty, emerging artificial intelligence initiatives and efforts to expand student access amid ongoing faculty governance discussions. Faculty leaders at the University of Wisconsin-Madison discussed lower graduate student enrollment, campus research, and financial aid changes at a meeting on Oct. 19. The committee also discussed the growing role of artificial intelligence in higher education, bringing in AI uncertainty researchers, faculty senate advocacy group PROFS and the Dean of the Graduate School, William Karpus. The discussion also touched on the role of the university’s chief diversity officer (CDO) position, which was recently replaced by new university-appointed members. Some faculty senators argued that removing these references could imply acceptance of an administrative decision made without sufficient faculty consultation. The University Committee also discussed plans for a November Faculty Senate presentation on sexual assault and considering holding a separate discussion forum outside the Faculty Senate meeting.
