Madison’s iconic Terrace chairs head into winter storage as students say goodbye to campus tradition
The Wisconsin Union will begin removing approximately 2,000 yellow, green and orange sunburst chairs from the Memorial Union Terrace. The University of Wisconsin-Madison's iconic Memorial Union Terrace chairs are heading into winter storage, marking the end of one of Madison's most recognizable traditions. Approximately 2,000 yellow, green and orange sunburst chairs will be removed from the Terrace on Monday, October 26, bringing the 2026 Terrace season to a close. The chairs are expected to return in spring 2027. Despite the departure of the chairs, Wisconsin Union officials say it does not mean the end to activities on campus year-round. The organization plans to host its annual Winter Carnival from February 4-6, 2027, offering seasonal activities.
