Dane County budget cuts threaten $55K for kids’ literacy program

The program provides books and literacy resources in English and Spanish through schools, childcare centers and organizations including the Salvation Army and The Road Home. Dane County budget cuts could threaten $55,000 in funding for a program providing free books and literacy resources to over 2,000 children in the county. Madison Reading Project’s co-executive director and founder, Rowan Childs, urged county supervisors to restore funding for the nonprofit’s Little Readers program, which serves children ages 0 to 5. The funding, which accounts for 30% of the organization’ early literacy budget, was discovered through a last-minute budget amendment. Most of the money is used for physical materials, some for staff time and coordination with partner agencies. The nonprofit is asking for the full $55K or partial funding while the county seeks additional private support.
