'Don't click! Don't pay!' Madison County warns scammers are impersonating officials
Madison County officials have issued an urgent fraud alert after scammers allegedly posed as Planning and Zoning Department employees, threatening property owne Scammers are impersonating Madison County government employees, threatening property owners with legal action and demanding immediate payments. The fraudulent scamsters are demanding payments through wire transfers, gift cards, prepaid debit cards, cryptocurrency and mobile payment applications. They are also demanding personal or banking information under the guise of processing permits, variances or rezoning applications. The county issued an urgent public warning on Oct. 22, stating that legitimate Planning and Zoning employees will never demand payment under threat of penalties. All legitimate Planning & Zoning fees must be paid directly to Madison County at 229 SW Pinckney St. in Madison.
