More Madison area businesses are adopting AI, survey finds

About 83% of surveyed businesses used artificial intelligence this year, up from 51% two years ago, the 2026 Next Normal Regional employer survey found. An annual survey of businesses in the Madison area has found a continued rise in the use of artificial intelligence in businesses. The 2026 Next Normal Regional Employer survey surveyed 218 businesses across the state, with 83% reporting using AI, up from 79% last year and 51% two years ago. Kevin Little, vice president of the Greater Madison Chamber of Commerce, said the increase in AI usage was expected and mirrored results from previous surveys. However, Moses Altsech, a teaching professor of marketing at the University of Wisconsin-Madison’s business school, expressed concern that while AI may increase efficiency in one area, employers often give employees more responsibilities to fill that extra time, causing them to work longer hours than before AI was introduced. Zach Brandon, president of The Greater Madison chamber of Commerce emphasized that AI is an accelerant to human potential, not a replacement for human capability.
