Tucked Between Madison And Minneapolis Is Wisconsin's Tiny City Called 'Bicycling Capital Of America'
From limestone tunnels and rolling prairie rides to ice cream stops, fiberglass giants, and June's Butterfest, this Midwest gem pedals pure charm. Saptha, Wisconsin, known as "America's Dairyland," is known as the "Bicycling Capital of America" due to its dedication to the sport. The town of Sparta, located between Madison and Minneapolis, has been dubbed "Bicycle Capital of the America" since 1990. It sits at the confluence of the Elroy-Sparta State Trail and the La Crosse River State Trail, two of the region's favorite cycling routes. The city, named for the ancient Greek state, grew after subterranean artesian waters were discovered in the valley. The Elroy/Spartas State Trail is one of the best rail trails in North America, stretching 32 miles of wetland, prairie, agricultural, and unglaciated terrain across Wisconsin's Driftless Region. The main attraction is a three-quarters-long tunnel with three tunnels, which are still open May through October. The local bicycle museum celebrates the innovation arc of this machine introduced in 1816.
