The Madison Metropolitan School District (MMSD) Board of Education has unanimously approved the 2026-27 budget for the district. The budget prioritises investments in early literacy, full-day 4K, multilingual programming, and career and technical education. Approximately 80% of MMSD's expenses go towards employee wages and related personnel costs, making compensation, benefits and health insurance central factors in district financial planning. Local taxpayers fund approximately 90% of the district’s annual budget, a significantly higher than most other districts in the state. Superintendent Joe Gothard highlighted the state funding system's failure to meet the cost of educating students, placing an unfair burden on taxpayers and forcing districts to plan for the long-term.
