HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WAFF) - The Huntsville-Madison County Chamber is hosting a community softball game at Toyota Field to celebrate Armed Forces Week.

The event will feature local leaders and veterans all stepping up to bat.

Armed Forces Week is a chance for the community to celebrate and thank local veterans.

Retired Maj. Gen. Jim Myles says he appreciates it when people thank him for his service.

“When they say thank you for your service that helps us to remember and think about those that we serve with that paid the ultimate sacrifice,” said Myles. “And it’s just wonderful that this community goes the extra step to say that.”

Myles said it’s not just soldiers that have made sacrifices.

“It’s their families,” said Myles. “We joined the Army, we raised the right hand and we said, ‘We will protect and defend the Constitution. But our spouses didn’t do that. And our families didn’t do that.”

Myles said he is looking forward to watching prominent local people playing like Madison Mayor Paul Finley.

“It is just a great event because you’re going to watch something like Paul Finley, who’s really a great athlete,” said Myles. “Although he has a 17-year-old brain and thinks he can play, he’s got a 50-year-old body. So, it’s fun to watch him.”

“It actually has a lineage all the way back to the 1970s of some stuff that we shot down on the drone,” said Myles. “And so we’re gonna be giving that to the winner.”

Myles said he wanted to thank the community.

“This is a special place,” said Myles. “The fact that this is just one of the many things that the community does to honor soldiers and their families is always good to see.”

The first 500 people to attend the free softball event will receive free hotdogs.

Gates open at 5:30 p.m. and the first pitch is at 6 p.m.
