Madison County Excludes Data Centers From Enterprise Zone Property Tax Incentives
Madison County excludes data centers from Southwestern Madison County Enterprise Zone property tax abatements, citing strong demand and protection of local tax revenue. The Madison County Board has voted to exclude data centers from property tax abatements offered through the Southwestern Madison County Enterprise Zone. The decision was made by Chairman Chris Slusser who argued that strong demand for data center development was unnecessary. The amendment preserves property tax revenue for local taxing districts while allowing communities to consider proposed developments. Qualifying projects in the Southwest zone, Granite City, Madison and Venice, currently receive a 10-year property taxabement on eligible improvements. However, the amendment excludes data centers. The county intends to pursue similar restrictions in other enterprise zones.
