MADISON, Wis. (WMTV) - It was another record-setting year for tourism in Wisconsin.

Gov. Tony Evers’ Office announced on Tuesday that 2023 state tourism generated $25 billion in total economic impact, which leveled the previous record in 2022 of $23.7 billion. Last year received 113 million visits by people wanting to see what the Badger State has to offer. It also marked the highest year on record of overnight visits, at 46 million.

“Wisconsin has so much to offer, from waterslides to watersports, hiking trails to contrails, and world-champion sports teams to world-champion cheese, so it’s no wonder we’ve seen yet another record-breaking year for Wisconsin tourism for the second year in a row,” Gov. Evers said.

Officials noted every county in the state reported economic impact growth, with more than 178,000 part-time and full-time jobs across various sectors in the tourism industry. This is an increase of 2% from the previous year.

Destination Madison reported its Direct Visitor Spending numbers hit $1.5 billion last year. Dane County added around 900 jobs to the hospitality industry and visitors spent an average of $4.1 million per day in Dane County in 2023.

Dane County exceeded Wisconsin growth in all reported categories, according to Destination Madison. The organization’s President & CEO Ellie Westman Chin said these numbers show people are choosing Madison as a top place to travel.

“The robust meetings, events and sports audiences were complemented by droves of leisure visitors, giving Madison and Dane County a well-rounded visitor profile that we will build upon in 2024 and beyond,” Westman Chin said.

Madison and Dane County saw increases in all key sectors in 2023, which was led by food and beverage at $434 million.
