Cooking oil theft investigation widens in Sun Prairie, police say

Two men are facing charges after Sun Prairie police say they were caught stealing cooking oil from a local restaurant in the early hours of October 2nd — and investigators say the case could be part of a much bigger problem. Police in Sun Prairie, Wisconsin, have charged two men with misdemeanor theft and felony possession of burglarious tools for stealing cooking oil from a local restaurant. The men, Guangguo Li, and Zhengwei Xu, were caught stealing oil from Panda Garden restaurant on Oct. 1, according to a criminal complaint filed in Dane County Circuit Court. The police believe this could be part of a larger problem as they search for similar cases nationwide, which they believe are linked to a federal case in which federal prosecutors allege that several individuals stole large volumes of used restaurant cooking oil, which was ultimately refined into biodiesel fuel. The complaint stated that neither man had a key to unlock the restaurant's oil containers, which were secured with a lock, and the men instead used tools to siphon the oil out of them. The theft was reported to have occurred around 2:33 a.m. local time.
