Anson-Madison Water District resumes fluoridation of water
The district temporarily stopped putting the additive in water after an equipment malfunction led to a ‘do not drink’ order. The Anson-Madison Water District, which provides public water to parts of Anson, Madison and Embden, has resumed its fluoride use following a malfunction that led to high levels of the additive. The district has installed a new fluoride pump and is working on a 30-day deadline from the state’s Drinking Water Program to install it. The issue with the previous equipment led to the overfeed, and a “do not drink” order was lifted in Madison first. Critics of fluoridated drinking water argue that exposure to the chemical can lead to increased bone fractures in adults and potentially negatively affect children younger than 8 years old. In Maine, whether to fluoridate water is a local decision, and the water district itself plays no role.
