UW-Madison breaks ground on cyclotron expansion for cancer and Alzheimer’s research
MADISON, Wis. — The University of Wisconsin-Madison is breaking ground on an expansion centered on a new cyclotron, a particle accelerator that researchers will use to develop tools for imaging The University of Wisconsin-Madison is beginning a construction of a new cyclotron, a particle accelerator that will be used to develop tools for cancer and Alzheimer’s research. The new machine will use electric and magnetic fields to accelerate particles smaller than atoms, which can produce radioactive atoms that researchers attach to molecules designed to target diseased cells that could enable precise imaging and treatment. The university already operates a smaller cyclotrons and the new machine is expected to increase production of molecules used in this research by twofold to eightfold. Dr. Nita Ahuja, dean of the UW School of Medicine and Public Health, said the expanded facility will bring researchers and physicians together with the equipment and rare materials needed to develop and test ideas.
