Madison School District Approves 2026-27 Budget

Madison schools just approved next year's budget — and local taxpayers are covering about 90% of it. The Madison Metropolitan School District Board of Education unanimously approved the 2026-27 budget, largely due to rising health insurance costs, inflation, and a state funding formula that leans heavily on local property taxpayers. The vote comes after warnings about compensation pressures and the district's reliance on local Property taxes. The district's preliminary budget projected premiums rising 14.9% for Dean and 18.24% for Quartz effective July 1, 2026. Potential cost pressures could reach $30.2 million and $38.2m, driven by compensation increases, inflationary adjustments and health-insurance hikes. The budget includes an estimated 90 percent of funding for the district’s shared costs from local property taxes, higher than what most other Wisconsin school districts pay. The state funding system has been criticized by Superintendent Joe Gothard for not providing sufficient investment for schools to keep pace with the cost of educating students.
