MADISON, Wis. -- A snow-covered localizer was to blame for several delayed and diverted flights Tuesday at the Dane County Regional Airport, staff told News 3 Now.

DCRA marketing and communications director Michael Riechers said that heavy snow caused the localizer to stop operating. The localizer is a piece of the landing system that can help pilots find the runway even in bad weather.

The equipment is not directly managed by DCRA staff, but rather by the FAA. Riechers said similar situations have happened before during heavy snowstorms.

Because of the issue with the localizer, Riechers said several flights into Madison had to be delayed, and some inbound flights had to be diverted. He said a total number of delayed and diverted flights would not be available until after Tuesday's snowstorm clears out.

The localizer has since been cleared off, and planes are arriving in Madison once again, but Riechers said that poor weather like Tuesday's can have a ripple effect, delaying flights later in the day and into tomorrow.

Weather in nearby destinations including Minneapolis and Chicago can also have an effect on Dane County. A check of the airport's online arrival list shows that some flights into Madison were delayed by upwards of four hours. Multiple departures are also delayed, and three flights have already been cancelled.
