WISCONSIN (WQOW) - Nurses in Wisconsin are now using artificial intelligence as a tool to help them, their co-workers, and patients.

According to UW Health in Madison, since 2023, 75 nurses in their program have begun using generative AI. This technology was first introduced as a way to draft responses to patients' messages in their medical portal 'MYCHART.'

Now, they are looking at using artificial intelligence for end of shift reports, assigning the correct amount of staff to the right number of patients, and virtual nursing. The goal of this is to keep health care readily available and allow nurses to focus on caring for their patients.

"No computer will ever replace the human touch of a nurse," said Rudy Jackson, the Chief Nurse Executive at UW Health. "It's just not going to happen. What we are here to do is to take care of our patients, to place hands on our patients. And, if we can alleviate some of that administrative burden, then that gives us the time we need to take care of the people in our communities."

They said it is important now and in the future for nurses to continue to be in the conversation of how AI is used.
