UW-Madison’s $62M cyclotron lab expansion will explore promising cancer treatments

The cyclotron lab creates atoms called radionuclides that can help clinicians diagnose and treat different types of cancers as well as image different diseases The University of Wisconsin-Madison's cyclotron lab, located in the basement of the Wisconsin Institutes for Medical Research, is set to undergo a $62M expansion to explore promising new cancer treatments. The expansion will include the addition of an additional emitter and the nation's first alpha-particle cyclotrons. The radionuclides, sometimes called radioisotopes, have been successful in treating cancers and imaging diseases. The project will also include the creation of new floors for research and use more space for patients and research. The National Institutes of Health also provided a $10 million grant for the project. The extension will allow the university to create radionlocides and treat patients all in one building.
