Madison Mayor Drops Reelection Bid, Cites ‘Toxic Political Culture’

The 'price of serving has become too high,' says Mayor Satya Rhodes-Conway. Madison Mayor Satya Rhodes-Conway has announced she will not run for a third term in office due to threats to herself, city council members, staff, and her family. Rhodes-conway, who was first elected in 2019 and won reelection in 2023 by an 11-point margin, had initially announced her reelection campaign in July 2026. She cited a "toxic political culture" as the reason for her decision, stating that the "price of serving has become too high" and that local democracy is at risk from a lack of transparency and personal attacks. Over the summer, Rhodes-Connell faced criticism following the killing of 38-year-old Corey Ruiz at the hands of a Madison police officer. The interim independent police monitor who was investigating the Ruiz shooting was fired in a 14-6 vote by the city’s common council, following a dispute over her authority to subpoena materials related to the incident. Dane County Executive Melissa Agard expressed concern over the role threats and harassment played in Rhodes-Corrigan's decision.
