Madison – Wisconsin coach Greg Gard and his assistants have relentlessly recruited Minnesota point guard Daniel Freitag.

After Freytag competed at UW camp shortly after his freshman year of high school, Gard knew he had a #1 guard opportunity for the class of 2024.

Gard was not deterred by the prospect that Freytag would eventually choose to play football in college.

That early determination in late spring of 2021 and the staff’s unwavering commitment led Freitag to announce Friday that he has committed to UW and plans to make the Kohl Center his new home.

“I chose Wisconsin because the relationship I had with Coach Jared and Coach (Joe) Krappenhoft and everyone else was unparalleled,” Freitag said in his advertisement on 247 Sports.

“I think Wisconsin is a great fit,” he said. “He does everything he’s supposed to do.”

Daniel Freitag is also an exceptional wide receiver

Freitag transfers from Jefferson High School in Bloomington to Southern California Academy for his senior year and plans to focus on basketball. He got a great offer to play football at UW and several other schools.

His final five college picks were: UW, Notre Dame, Virginia, Baylor, and Minnesota.

Freitag, 6-foot-2, 175 pounds, is UW’s second commitment for the class of 2024. He joins fellow AAU Jack Robeson, a 6-7 forward from Lakeville North High School in Minnesota. Robison committed to UW in October and admitted that he worked hard to direct Freitag to join him in Madison.

UW had the opportunity to recruit a point guard for the class of 2023 but Gard remained committed to Freitag.

“They’ve done a really good job recruiting me the last two years and haven’t made any minor guards in my grade or the surrounding ranks,” explained Freytag. “It shows how much confidence they had in hiring me. It was just my confidence in these employees that got me to Wisconsin.”

Chucky Hepburn and Freytag could be paired together at UW in 2024-25

The starting quarterback, Chucky Hepburn, is slated as a junior next season, and Hepburn and Freytag could conceivably be combined in 2024-25. Then Freytag could take over after Hepburn left.

“Tell me all I want to hear,” said Freytag, referring to Gard, “how I’m going to spend a year with Chucky and after Chucky’s gone, the car is mine to drive.”

Bolley added, “I love Chucky. Imagine Chucky being a super athlete. That’s Daniel. They can play together.”

“And then when Chucky is gone, Daniel will have the experience to take over. Daniel is the type of player who can thrive and fit in perfectly in Wisconsin.”

Freytag is confident, studious and mature for his age.

“Daniel Freytag has developed into a three-tier player,” said Jefferson basketball coach Jeff Ivins. “Daniel was always able to get to the edge and score – he’s now able to finish through contact – but his mid-range and three-point shooting has improved dramatically.

“In addition, Dan has shown great strides as a leader who has shown a great understanding of what we as a team are trying to achieve philosophically on both offense and defense. Dan continues to show progress as a player on the defensive end of the floor and we hope he matures into the type of defensive player who can excel in the college game.” .

Paul noted that Freitag had gradually grown from a player who generally relied on his physical talents to a more patient and comfortable leader on and off the field.

“It’s now under control,” Bolley said. “Sometimes these guys just get out of control because they’re so good. Now he knows how to drive and that’s the key.”

Freytag was asked about joining the UW along with fellow AAU member Robson. What will the duo bring to the Kohl Center?

The Badgers are still targeting Con Knibble and Jackson McAndrew

The UW crew still has two important targets for the class of 2024: Wisconsin Lutheran guard/forward Con Kneibel, who made an unofficial visit last January and is scheduled for another unofficial visit June 21; and Minnesota forward Jackson McAndrew, who paid an official visit to UW last October.

Freitag and McAndrew both got to play Howard Pulley.

“They’re on the road together,” said Polly.

Speaking early in the week about recruiting Freitag, Bulli posited that his talented guard might already have made up his mind.

“I think he scared a lot of people with football,” said Boley. But maybe Daniel doesn’t care. Maybe he’s realizing that, “I’m going to Wisconsin.”

Turns out Pulley was right.
