MADISON, Wis. (WMTV) - The Dane County Sheriff’s Office is warning the public of phone scams that have become more believable with AI.

The sheriff’s office says by using AI, scammers are able to create a recording and make their victims believe their grandchild is in danger and need help, otherwise known as the common grandparent scam.

“We need to share this information far and wide to protect our most vulnerable community members from these callous scammers,” Sheriff Kalvin Barrett said. “The only way to deter this calculated criminal activity is to spread awareness of their ruthless tactics.”

The sheriff’s office advises everyone to be mindful of how much is shared on social media accounts. People can use privacy settings to adjust how much is available to the public and prevent scammers from accessing video content.

If anyone receives this type of phone call, the sheriff’s office says to hang up and call the family member directly to see how they’re doing.
