MADISON (WKOW) -- The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources announced the winners of the Keep Wildlife Wild poster content Monday morning. The theme for this year was "Safe in Their Home."

The winners of this year's program span the state of Wisconsin and across the fourth, fifth, and sixth grades.

Because the frequency of human-animal interactions increases with the warm weather, the DNR wants to increase awareness about wildlife and what to do when encountering a wild animal.

The Keep Wildlife Wild program was born in 2014 with a focus on spreading information about wildlife animals and their behaviors. The goal of the contest is to teach kids about the importance of enjoying and observing wildlife in the wild and not keeping wildlife in homes as pets. It also keeps younger children engaged with the world around them by allowing them to create art that represents what the theme means to them.

All winning posters are available on the DNR's website.
