MADISON, Wis. (WMTV/Gray News) - It was a scary scene Tuesday after a school bus rolled over with students inside amid a Wisconsin snowstorm.

The incident happened right around 4 p.m. Tuesday in northern Dane County near the town of Roxbury.

A chaotic scene unfolded; however, students Ryder, 13, and Shelby Falkenstein, 14, helped all the children evacuate the smoking bus safely.

“I hear the bus driver scream and say, ‘Oh no,’” Ryder said. “I look up. I see swerving, like we were moving back and forth. All of a sudden, we were turning, and then we fell. I was a little nauseous.”

Right after the bus rolled over, Ryder said he started seeing smoke.

“It’s scary,” Ryder said. “You got to keep calm and just think of how to get out.”

Ryder said he immediately tried to open the emergency hatch on the roof of the bus, but at first, it didn’t open. After kicking it, Ryder said he was able to pry it open and started escorting the other students on board.

“I started just pulling kids out,” Ryder said. “I got like four kids out of the bus. And then we just walked over to the road.”

While Ryder did this, his sister Shelby called 911.

Although some are describing Ryder and Shelby’s actions as heroic, they said they were just relieved everything worked out.

“Always stay calm in the moment if other people aren’t, so you’re able to help everyone out of the bus,” Shelby said.

Sauk City Fire and EMS responded to the scene and reported a few minor injuries. Everyone ended up being OK.
