MADISON (WKOW) — Public Health Madison & Dane County issued an overdose alert after at least five overdose-related emergency calls were reported in less than 24 hours on Monday. Public Health Madison & Dane County has issued an overdose alert after at least five overdose-related emergency calls were reported in less than 24 hours. The number of calls was higher than the county typically sees in a single day, according to data from hospitals and emergency medical services providers. Several calls involved cocaine use, but symptoms were consistent with opioid overdoses. The health department is urging people who use drugs to take precautions, including never using alone and testing drugs for fentanyl before use and carrying naloxone, an overdose-reversal medication. Fentanyl test strips, nalcoxone and other safer-use supplies are available through the Syringe Services Program at Public Health Madison and Dane County locations.
